Navratri is the most auspicious and colourful Hindu festival of India which is celebrated at homes with great enthusiasm, devotion and integrity.
The most fortunate one is the Sharad Navratri, or the one that comes after the Autumn season.
Celebration of Navratri at home activities:
The Navratri is celebrated at homes in various ways throughout India and the rest of the world, but there are some commonalities among them all.
2) Kalash Sthapna
The first prime step toward celebrating the Navratri at home is the Kalash Sthapna.
To welcome Maa Durga, the Kalash is established at home.
A red cloth is spread.
On the red cloth, the idol of Maa Durga is placed. It is decorated with a paste of Roli or Vermilion, Chandan or Sandalwood and Turmeric or Haldi.
In front of the idol, the Kalash or an earthen pot is placed.
A bunch of Mango leaves is placed inside the earthen pot and the lid is placed on it. The Kalash is filled with Ganga water.
Some rice grains are put on the lid and then a coconut wrapped up in a red cloth is placed on the top.
Red soil is also put sometimes in front of the Maa Durga idol with Barley seeds sown in it.
3) Engaging in Spiritual Development
The Nav Durga is a time for serious reflection on religion and spirituality. Make time to meditate for longer periods of time.
At the time of Prayer, light a lamp and incense stick. Offer some flowers in front of Maa Durga. Sprinkle some water on the sown Barley seeds.
During the prayer or meditation, the Gayatri Mantra can be recited to direct your spirit toward creation, unity, and life.
4) Lighting an Akhand Jyoti in front of Goddess Durga's idol or picture.
The Akhand Jyoti is an oil lamp that, once lighted, burns for a very long time. Keep the lamp burning in front of the statue or painting of Durga for all the nine nights of Navratri.
In your absence, an electric candle can be lit at home instead of the lamp.
5) Aarti should be performed in front of the Durga idol or painting.
Celebration of Navratri at home is incomplete without Maa's Aarti.
Light certain lamps or diyas after soaking their wicks in ghee.
Next, do a little prayer and wave the lamps in front of the picture or statue of Durga to express your undying love and respect.
6) Fasting can be a great way to celebrate the Navratri.
For Navratri, there are numerous methods to fast.
It is okay to cease fasting during Navratri and resume your regular diet if you feel that you cannot fast for some reason.
7) Gifting and honouring small girls and women as a mark of respect to Maa Durga and womanhood.
On the eighth or nineth day of the Navratri puja, invite nine small girls to your home. They are considered to be the nine forms of Maa Durga.
Serve them the special meal prepared for them, give sweets and gifts to them when they are going.
8) Cleaning your homes and bodies, keeping your minds and thoughts Pure.
Cleansing negative feelings like hatred, jealousy, anger, and violence are the main motives behind celebrating the Navratri at home.
Have a bath each day so that your body is pure and clean, just like your mind. Keep your homes clean so that the Goddess makes a visit.
9) Visarjan on the tenth day of the Navratri.
After the nine days of Navratri puja at home, Visarjan or a send-off is done to Maa Durga. It is done with great respect and religious fervour.
After doing the regular puja, sprinkle the kalash water in all rooms of the house. Feed birds with the rice grains that had been kept on the kalash lid. The barley seeds that were sown would have grown well by this time. Place them under a tree in the garden.
Navratri Puja is believed to bring prosperity and wealth to the household. Maa Durga blesses the family with health, wealth, wisdom and success.
